Shammah: Standing When Others Run

Spread the love

Shammah is easy to overlook. His name appears briefly among David’s mighty men, and yet his moment is unforgettable. When the Philistines gathered and the people fled, Shammah took his stand in the middle of a field of lentils and defended it. “So he took his stand in the midst of the plot, defended it and struck the Philistines; and the Lord brought about a great victory” (2 Samuel 23:12, NASB).

A bean field does not sound important enough to fight over. That is precisely the point. Faithfulness is often tested in places that seem ordinary. Many people want a large assignment, a public role, or a dramatic mission. But sometimes God is watching to see whether we will stand firm in the small field He has already given us. For one person that field is the home. For another it is private holiness, sound doctrine, a difficult marriage, or a quiet responsibility in the congregation.

Shammah reminds us that courage is not always public spectacle. Sometimes it is simply refusing to surrender ground that belongs to God. Others may run. Others may decide the field is not worth defending. But the faithful man stays where duty calls.

Devotional thought:

Do not abandon your field because others lost heart. Stay where God put you, and stand
